You can use a paper plate but the bird in the image is made from a sheet of stock paper. 

Place invisible tape underneath the corners before you cut it out, to avoid tearing when you fold.

After cutting it out, fold the bird in half, but not the tail. Fold the wings up. Pinch the head and pull out the beak, origami-style.


Cut out the base (legs) and glue it underneath the bird. In the image you can see I added a quarter inch to the base to fold at the bottom, as "feet" as my paper was a bit flimsy. 
Template


The template has scalloped wings because the paper plate had scallops but I made the sculpture without, from stock paper.






Don't forget to add a quarter inch to the base if you have lighter weight paper, in other words cut straight across the bottom of the page
